Recommended Environment

netTrekker makes every effort to share relevant, engaging and media-rich content to its users. Use these guidelines and our System Check to ensure that your web browser as well as the recommended media players and plug-ins are up-to-date so that you may have the best possible experience.

Content Filtering
netTrekker offers safe, academically relevant, educator reviewed resources. It is recommended that schools modify their content filter and “whitelist” any site with a referrer from the netTrekker and associated domains.

The following domains must be allowed for proper netTrekker operation.

  • *.nettrekker.com — netTrekker product
  • *.knov8.services — Knovation authentication services
  • *.speechstream.net — Dictionary and Read Aloud features within netTrekker are provided by TextHelp

We suggest allowing the following domains, but these are not required for netTrekker operation.

  • *.knovationlearning.com — Our corporate site
  • https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC47ZVeY-308Q4qHo5tI1aQA — Some video content for support and training is hosted with Knovation’s YouTube Channel.

Because each filtering device is different, please check with your filter vendor on updating. There should be an interface with the filter that allows you to list the websites or referrer information for the sites you want to allow.

Web Browsers
Web technology and the way we access the internet is always evolving. As new versions of web browsers are released, Knovation will review the impact on our products and work to meet user expectations by testing for compatibility in order to create the best experience possible.

We recommend using web browsers for the supported operating systems listed below. Please use our System Check to ensure that your web browser up-to-date.

Operating System: Apple iOS 7 and 8 for iPad
Operating System: Apple OS X 10.8 and above for Desktops
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 and 8 for Desktops

netTrekker may also work in older versions of the browsers listed, or in other browsers not listed, but these will not be tested and are not recommended.

Apple Safari, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox are designed to support all previous capabilities, and we will make every attempt to provide support of these releases within a reasonable time frame.

Microsoft Internet Explorer has the tendency to introduce new functionality which may have impact on previous capabilities. Knovation will review the impact of Internet Explorer releases and test support by the start of each school year.

Puffin Academy is the fastest mobile browser for K-12 education to support the use of Flash-based content. We have worked to provide netTrekker as an approved solution through this mobile application.

Web Browser Pop-ups
While netTrekker itself does not use pop-ups, you may receive them if your web browser requests your permission to use a plug-in, or if a resource requires a plug-in missing from your system.
Web Browser Cookies
To ensure that netTrekker and all of its resources function correctly, session and third-party cookies must be enabled within your web browser.
Browser: Apple Safari
Apple Safari for Apple OS X (for iPad)
  1. From the home screen, open the iPad Settings app
  2. From the left-column, tap Safari
  3. Within the section labeled Privacy & Security in the right-column, tap Block Cookies
  4. From the list, tap Always Allow
  5. From the top of the right-column, tap < Safari
  6. After making all desired changes, close the Settings app
Apple Safari for Apple OS X(for Desktop)
  1. From the application menu, select Safari
  2. From the list, select Preferences…
  3. Within the Preferences window, select the Privacy tab
  4. Within the section labeled Cookies and other website data, select the option labeled Always allow
  5. After making all desired changes, close the Preferences window, then close and reopen the browser
Browser: Google Chrome
For Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X

  1. Open the Chrome menu by selecting the horizontal line icon, located to the right of the address bar
  2. From the list, select Settings
  3. At the bottom of the page, select Show advanced settings… to show additional settings
  4. Within the section labeled Privacy, select the button labeled Content settings…
  5. Within the Content settings window, and section labeled Cookies:
    1. Select the option labeled Allow local data to be set (recommended)
    2. Unselect the option labeled Block third-party cookies and site data
  6. After making all desired changes, select the button labeled Done to close Content settings window, then close and reopen the browser

For Microsoft Windows

  1. Open the Internet Explorer menu by selecting the gear icon, located to the right of the address bar and tabs
  2. From the list, select Internet Options
  3. Within the Internet Options window, select the Privacy tab.
  4. Within the section labeled Settings, select the button labeled Advanced
  5. Within the Advanced Privacy Settings window:
    1. Select the option labeled Override automatic cookie handling
    2. Within both sections labeled First-party Cookies and Third-party Cookies, select the option labeled Accept
    3. Select the option labeled Always allow session cookies
  6. After making all desired changes, close the Advanced Privacy Settings window, close the Internet Options window, then close and reopen the browser

  1. Open the Firefox menu by selecting the horizontal line icon, located to the right of the address bar
  2. From the list, select the icon labeled Preferences
  3. Within the Preferences window, select the Privacy tab
  4. Within the section labeled History:
    1. From the drop-down menu labeled Firefox will, select Use custom settings for history
    2. Select the option labeled Accept cookies from sites
    3. From the drop-down menu labeled Accept third-party cookies, select Always
  5. After making all desired changes, close the Preferences window, then close and reopen the browser
Mozilla Firefox for Microsoft Windows
  1. Open the Firefox menu by selecting the horizontal line icon, located to the right of the address bar
  2. From the list, select the icon labeled Options
  3. Within the Options window, select the Privacy tab
  4. Within the section labeled History:

Web Browser Plug-ins

For the best possible experience when using netTrekker and its resources, the following plug-ins must be installed and enabled in your web browser. Follow the link for each plug-in listed below to download and install or verify an existing installation.

Security Notice About Apple QuickTime

Apple will no longer be providing security updates for QuickTime for Windows, leaving this software vulnerable to exploitation. Computers running QuickTime for Windows will continue to work after support ends. However, using unsupported software may increase the risks from viruses and other security threats. Potential negative consequences include loss of confidentiality, integrity, or availability of data, as well as damage to system resources or business assets. The only mitigation available is to uninstall QuickTime for Windows.

New versions of Windows since 2009 have included support for the key media formats, such as H.264 and AAC, that QuickTime 7 enabled. All current Windows web browsers support video without the need for browser plug-ins.

Note that this does not apply to QuickTime on Apple Mac OS X.

Verify Plug-ins are Allowed/Enabled

If web browser plug-ins are blocked or disabled while installed, they will not function as expected. Use the following steps to verify their status from your web browser.

Browser: Apple Safari
Apple Safari for Apple OS X

  1. From the application menu, select Safari
  2. From the list, select Preferences…
  3. Within the Preferences window, select the Security tab
  4. Within the section labeled Internet plug-ins, select the button labeled Website Settings…
  5. From the list of plugins on the left, select the desired plug-in
  6. From the list of websites on the right, select the desired website and verify that Block is not selected
  7. From the drop-down menu labeled When visiting other websites, verify that Block is not selected
  8. After making all desired changes, select the button labeled Done to close Website Settings…, close the Preferences window, then close and reopen the browser
Browser: Google Chrome
Google Chrome for Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X

  1. Open the Chrome Plug-in Settings, by entering chrome://plugins into the address bar
  2. From the list of plug-ins, verify that the desired plug-in is not disabled, indicated with grey background and text
  3. To enable a disabled plug-in, select Enable
  4. After making all desired changes, select the button labeled Done to close Content settings, then close and reopen the browser

Microsoft Internet Explorer for Microsoft Windows

  1. Open the Internet Explorer menu by selecting the gear icon, located to the right of the address bar and tabs
  2. From the list, select Manage add-ons
  3. Within the section labeled Add-on Types, select Toolbars and Extensions
  4. From the drop-down menu labeled Show, select All add-ons
  5. From the list of plug-ins on the right, verify that the status is not Disabled
  6. To enable a disabled plug-in, right-click on the desired plug-in and select Enable
  7. After making all desired changes, select the button labeled Close to close the Manage add-ons window, then close and reopen the browser
Browser: Mozilla Firefox
Mozilla Firefox for Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X

  1. Open the Firefox menu by selecting the horizontal line icon, located to the right of the address bar
  2. From the list, select the icon labeled Add-ons
  3. From the menu on the left, select Plugins
  4. From the list of plug-ins on the right, verify that Never Activate is not selected for the desired plug-in
  5. After making all desired changes, close and reopen the browser
Mobile Devices
While netTrekker and many of the resources currently included work well on mobile devices, desktop devices are the preferred environment for accessing netTrekker as the user interface has not been specifically optimized for the mobile environment.

Using netTrekker with an Apple® iPad

All Cookies must be allowed to save on your iPad to login to netTrekker. Refer to Session Cookies section above in Web Browsers. Additional information about using netTrekker with the Apple iPad can be found in our guide Make the Most of netTrekker on Your iPad.

Using netTrekker with a Google Chromebook

The Google Chromebook does not natively support the sound file format currently used for the Read Aloud feature within netTrekker. However, you are able to add the functionality of the Read Aloud feature by adding the SpeakIt! extension from the Chrome Web Store. Accessing Flash-Based Content

Approximately 15% of the resources currently included in netTrekker are developed with Adobe Flash and are not natively compatible with some mobile devices, such as the Apple iPad. We have worked to provide netTrekker as an approved solution through the Puffin Academy web browser, the fastest mobile browser for K-12 education to support the use of Flash-based content. The Puffin Academy web browser is available for Apple mobile devices, as well as Android-based devices.
